WHITTINGTON NAMED SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
AND SENIOR COMMERCIAL BANKER FOR NORTH STATE BANK

January 24, 2003

Raleigh, N.C. . . Phillip T. Whittington, Jr. has been named senior vice president and senior commercial banker for North State Bank in Raleigh, announced Larry D. Barbour, president and CEO for North State. Whittington previously spent more than 22 years in the Wilmington, NC banking market, where he focused on lending and served in several management positions.

“We are pleased to have someone with Phil’s experience,” said Barbour. “Customers will be pleased with the level of knowledge and expertise he offers, and our bank will benefit as well.”

For Whittington, joining North State Bank is a return to his native town of Raleigh. He attended North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina School of Banking, and the Wake Forest University Wachovia Corporate Finance Program.
Whittington and his wife, Patricia, reside in Raleigh.

North State Bank is a full service community bank, founded in 2000, headquartered in Raleigh and currently serves Wake County with two offices, one in Raleigh and one in Garner. On October 16, 2002, the bank held a ground breaking ceremony for a new, expanded facility in Garner at 835 Highway 70E.
