Larry D. Barbour

Larry D. Barbour was raised in Raleigh where he attended public schools. After graduating from North Carolina State University in 1971, he started his banking career with Wachovia, ultimately being elected vice president in 1983. In 1988, he joined Triangle Bank where he served as senior vice president and market executive for the Raleigh office. He is a graduate of the North Carolina School of Banking.

Larry's civic activities include being a board member of the NCSU Board of Visitors, a board member of the Boy Scouts of America Occoneechee Council, Salvation Army board member, and Chairman of the Hospice of Wake County Capital Campaign Major Gifts Committee.

Larry has been recognized as a North Carolina State University Distinguished Alumnus (1997) and is a founding board member/treasurer of the Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education.

David Shipp

David has more than 25 years of experience in banking, having spent the last 20 years as a Senior Vice President with Wachovia. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, he later received his MBA from the University of Texas. David is also a board member in the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the Risk Management Association.

Judy Stephenson

Judy M. Stephenson is executive vice president for business development and commercial lending for North State Bank. She joined North State in November of 1999 when it was proposed as a new financial services institution in North Carolina. North State opened its doors to customers in June with Judy's help. She has more than thirty-seven years of banking experience in North Carolina, having started her career with People's Bank and Trust, and subsequently served at Central Carolina Bank, Southern National Bank and Triangle Bank. At Triangle Bank, she was a senior vice president and commercial lender until November 1999.

Judy is a member of the board of directors for the Garner Rotary Club and serves on the membership committee for the Garner Chamber of Commerce. In prior years, she was a founder of the North Carolina Heart Association and served as a board member for ten years. She was chairman and served on the board of directors for the Garner Chamber of Commerce for fourteen years, and was an officer for the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce for six years.

In addition to these civic activities, Judy was appointed by Governor James B. Hunt to serve on the North Carolina State Personnel Commission for four years, the North Carolina Building Authority for six years, and the North Carolina Student Loan Program for two years.

A native of Henderson, NC, Judy is a graduate of Wilson Technical College, the North Carolina School of Banking at Chapel Hill management program, the National School of Commercial Lending at the University of Oklahoma, and attended North Carolina State University.

Kirk Whorf

Kirk joined North State in March, prior to the bank's opening. He came to North State from Triangle Bank, where he served as senior vice president and funds manager. His previous North Carolina banking experience includes having served as EDP audit manager for People's Bank, as transaction services manager for Centura Bank, and as chief financial officer for Unity Bank.

A native of Maryland, Kirk is a 1984 graduate of East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, with a degree in business administration. He is a certified public accountant.

Sandra A. Temple

Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer

Sandra A. Temple joined North State Bank in March prior to its opening. She came to North State from Triangle Bank, where she served in positions such as vice president of cash management operations, vice president of branch operations, branch manager, and as a consumer and commercial lender. During her more than 15 years of North Carolina banking experience, she also worked with First Citizens Bank in Raleigh as a vice president and project manager for mergers and acquisitions, and worked with Wachovia Bank. In addition, for five years she was a licensed sales representative with Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company, providing insurance and investments to professional groups.

A native of Wendell, NC, in Johnston County, Sandra attended North Carolina Wesleyan for two years. She serves as president for the North Carolina Chapter of the Community Associations Institute (CAI) and a member of the Banking Committee for CAI - National. She is a volunteer for the N.C. Kidney Foundation and formerly was a member of the Raleigh Host Lions Club.

Gerry Rogers

Rogers joined North State Bank in 2003 as vice president and senior loan administrative officer, with responsibility for loan documentation, credit review, problem loan and WATCH LIST management, and loan operations. He became the Chief Credit Officer/Senior Vice President in April of 2004.

Rogers began his banking career in 1970 when he joined The Fidelity Bank in Fuquay-Varina, his hometown. After holding different banking positions with several financial institutions in the Wake County area over the next thirteen years, he moved to Florida to serve as vice president and business banking group manager with Florida National Bank (now Wachovia). In 1989, he became president and chief executive officer of Community First Bank of Central Florida in Winter Garden, Florida, a $45 million in assets community bank with three branches in the Orlando metropolitan area, which became part of SouthTrust. In 1990, Rogers returned to North Carolina, joining Triangle Bank to serve as manager for Special Assets, Collections, and Loan Operations. Following Triangle's merger with RBC Centura, he served as a personal and business banking manager.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Rogers received his degree in Economics. He also is a graduate of the general, mid-management, and advanced management programs of the North Carolina Banking Association's North Carolina School of Banking at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking at the University of Delaware, the BAI Loan Review - Course 1, the ABA National Reg Z School, and the ABA National Compliance School. He holds a real estate brokers license from the state of North Carolina.

Greg Asbelle

Greg has joined North State Bank as senior vice president and director of cash management. He has approximately 10 years of experience in cash management services and is a certified treasury professional. Prior to joining North State, he served as assistant vice president and treasury services officer for Wachovia Bank.

A native of Winston-Salem, NC, Greg graduated from High Point University with a bachelor of science in computer info-systems. He is actively involved in the community by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.

Denise Barbour

Jeffery Billingsley

Jim Brothers serves North State Bank as vice president of construction lending. He has more than 34 years of experience serving the lending needs of the people and businesses of Raleigh and Wake County, most recently with Centura Bank in Raleigh. In the past, he worked for First Union Mortgage Corporation, Resolution Trust Corporation, AmSouth Mortgage Company, United Federal Savings Bank, and Triangle Bank.

Jim received his undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Christopher R. Bruffey

Chris Bruffey serves North State Bank as vice president and Garner city executive. A Garner native, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor of science in business administration. He served the Garner area for six years as a branch manager, small business banker, and city executive for Wachovia.

Active in the community, Chris is past president of the Garner Chamber of Commerce, past-president and secretary of the Garner Rotary Club, and a member of the Aversboro Road Baptist Church.

Ronnie Burbank

Ronnie will be located in our Wilmington office. Previously, he served as vice president and commercial lender for Coastal Federal Bank in Wilmington. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he received a bachelor of arts in political science. He is also a graduate of the School of Banking at Louisiana State University. Burbank. An active member of the Wilmington community, Ronnie serves as president and board member of Wilmington Downtown, Inc. He also serves on the board of the Brooklyn Arts Center and is a member of the Wilmington Civitan Club.

Barbara Doolittle

Barbara Doolittle serves North State Bank as vice president and account relationship manager. Her experience in the banking industry spans more than 29 years at Central Carolina Bank, with positions ranging from teller and customer service representative to branch manager and commercial lending officer. Barbara graduated from the North Carolina School of Banking and has been a longtime member of the North Raleigh Civitan Club. A native of Fishkill, NY, she and her husband, Scott, currently reside in Raleigh. Her son, Matt, attends Appalachian State University.

Chip Finley

Chip works out of our headquarters in the North Hills office, serving as our director of wealth management. In this role, he assists customers with all types of life investments, including stocks, mutual funds, bonds, variable & fixed annuities, life insurance, health insurance, long-term care insurance, as well as others. Services are offered through Capital Investment Group. He did his undergraduate work at The Citadel and his graduate study at Troy State University, where he received an M.S. in management. Chip volunteers as the president-elect for St. Raphael’s Booster Club and campaign committee member for the St. Raphael Activity Center Campaign.

Phillip Frye

Phillip Frye serves North State Bank as assistant vice president and business development officer. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, Phillip joined North State bank as a teller supervisor and has since been consistently promoted for his contributions to the bank. He volunteers in Wake County with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. He is also a board member for the National Students of Ailing Mothers and Fathers Support Group.

Jonathan Hand

Jonathan joined North State in early 2005 as vice president and commercial loan officer. He has more than 12 years of banking experience, holding positions such as market president, middle market client manager, and relationship manager. Jonathan has been involved as treasurer for the downtown Kinston revitalization team as well as various economic development organizations throughout eastern North Carolina. A graduate of East Carolina University, he holds a bachelor's degree in finance. He and his wife Angela currently live in Wake Forest with their two children.

Heather Healy

Brian Hedges

Ruth Payne

Ruth has more than eight years of experience in the banking industry, most recently working as Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager for Capital Bank. She brings additional management experience with her from positions at Midway Airlines and The Watt Disney Company. Ruth volunteers with the Duke Children’s Hospital and the United Way. She also provides shelter for lost or abandoned cats in the Raleigh community through Safe Haven for Cats.

Allyson Rayfield

Allyson Rayfield serves North State Bank as senior mortgage loan officer. She has more than 34 years of experience serving the lending needs of customers. Her previous positions were with Allied Home Mortgage, Triangle Lending Services and Family Mortgage Company. Allyson received her undergraduate degree from Indiana University. Allyson contributes to the community as an ambassador at the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce and member of the finance team at Unity Church of the Triangle.

Matt Robinson

Robert D. “Bobby” Ross

Bobby Ross is serving North State Bank as senior vice president and senior commercial lender for the bank's flagship North Raleigh office. He has 30 years of banking experience in North Carolina, holding positions with Bank of America, and most recently, as senior vice president and Raleigh city executive for First South Bank. He has held staff and management positions across the state of North Carolina, including: audit and credit in Charlotte; as a commercial banker and branch administrator in Wilmington; as city executive for Tarboro; as a senior credit risk manager in Raleigh and Fayetteville; as a community/consumer bank regional executive covering a region from Henderson to Fayetteville; and, as a senior vice president and commercial bank credit products manager in Raleigh.

He is a past president and campaign chairman for the Edgecombe County United Way, a past president of the Tarboro Area Chamber of Commerce, board member for Triangle Commercial Association of Realtors (TCAR) and a past board member for Education Financing Services, LLC. Bobby was also named the 2006 TCAR Associate of the year.

A native of Mint Hill, NC in Mecklenburg County, Bobby received both his undergraduate degree in accounting and his MBA from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

Stephen R. Salisbury

Steve is a senior vice president and senior lending officer for North State Bank. He joined the Bank in March 2002. Steve has more than 35 years of banking experience in North Carolina, and has served in management level positions at The Bank of North Carolina, NCNB (now Bank of America), Triangle Bank and Central Carolina Bank (now SunTrust Bank).

Steve is actively involved in the Raleigh/Wake County community through serving as chairman of the board for CASA, a nonprofit organization that provides housing assistance for clients with disabilities. He has served as a board member for United Arts of Wake County, board member and chairman for Raleigh Urban Ministries, board member and chairman for Robert Morris Associates Carolinas-Virginias Chapter, and as board member and chairman of the Wake County Department of Mental Illness, Substance Abuse and Developmental Disabilities.

Steve graduated from Duke University, the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

Beverly Southerland

Craig Swinson

Paula Tannery serves North State Bank as assistant vice president and office manager. She will be located in our Wilmington office. Paula has 20 years of banking experience, most recently working as a loan closing coordinator with Paragon Commercial Bank. A native of Raleigh, NC, she holds a business degree from Peace College and is also a graduate of the ABA Graduate School of Compliance Management. Paula is currently active in the Wilmington community, volunteering with the American Cancer Society, Red Sword Guild, and Koman Race for the Cure. She has also served as treasurer, member of the building committee and member of the church council for Windborne Methodist Church.

Virginia W. Watson

Virginia serves North State Bank as senior vice president for mortgage lending. With more than 21 years of experience in the mortgage industry, she has past experience in mortgage lending and management at First Federal Savings and Loan, SouthTrust Bank, Centura Bank, and Affiliate Mortgage LLC. In addition, she has served as an executive officer with the Wilmington Board of Realtors and the Winston-Salem Board of Realtors.

Virginia is involved in the Raleigh/Wake Mortgage Bankers, the NC Association of Mortgage Professionals, and the National Association of Mortgage Brokers. In the past, she has been involved with the NC Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. Virginia attended Hardbarger Business College.

Andrew Wheeler

Andrew has been with North State Bank practically from start-up. He began as a teller and advanced quickly to teller supervisor, loan operations, office manager and is currently vice president and West Raleigh commercial lender. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in business management. He remains active in the community through the Raleigh Host Lion’s Club and as a committee member for the North State Bank Summer Salute for Hospice of Wake County.

Phil Whittington

Phil Whittington joined North State Bank as senior vice president and senior commercial banker. He brings more than 30 years of NC banking experience to the role, which for the most part was spent in the Wilmington, NC market.

Phil is a Raleigh, NC native, and attended North Carolina State University. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Banking and the Wake Forest University Wachovia Corporate Finance Program.

Bill Wiley

Bill joined North State Bank in summer 2006. He has more than 20 years of experience in internal bank auditing, coming to North State Bank from Wachovia, where he served as senior vice president and internal audit manager.

A native of Ft. McPherson, Georgia, he graduated from North Carolina State University and BAI Graduate School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin. A Certified Bank Auditor, Bill has served on the Bedford Family YMCA Board of Directors and the Triangle Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors. He and his wife, Ruth, live in Raleigh.

Gary L. Woodlief

Gary Woodlief joined North State Bank as vice president and senior commercial loan officer. In September 2003, he opened North State's loan production office in the Wakefield Corporate Center. A graduate of East Carolina University with a degree in finance, his banking career of more than 14 years has primarily been in the Wake Country/Triangle area.

Gary is a member of the Economic Development Committee for the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Board of Directors for the Banks Kerr YMCA and the Raleigh chapter of Robert Morris Associates. He volunteers in the Education First Program at Lockhart Elementary and has served on the board of directors for the Knightdale Chamber and East Wake Alliance.
