Our History

North State Bank first opened its doors on June 1, 2000 with two offices - one in Raleigh, NC and the other in Garner, NC.  But the story does not start there.

During 1999, a group of area business people got together and discussed the need for a bank to serve the needs of small businesses in Raleigh, Garner, and the surrounding area.  Lawyers, physicians, dentists, accountants. All looking for a bank that valued relationships.  All looking for bankers with experience.  Bankers who could make decisions.  Bankers who wanted to help their companies grow.

Out of those discussions, North State Bank began to form.  Larry D. Barbour, who had been a banker in Raleigh for more than 25 years, was asked to head up the bank.  To take it from an idea...to "the doors are open"...and beyond.

Working with Judy Stephenson and others, Barbour assembled a board of directors that reads like a who's who of the business community of Raleigh.  With their support, the sale of stock began and more than 800 supporters stepped forward to jointly purchase more than $17 million in stock to launch the bank.  Once the future of the bank was set, Barbour began looking for the right bankers to be part of his team.  And he found them, including some top-notch lenders and business development staff members.
